Why we like Black Arts Toneworks
Black Arts Toneworks are all about heavy music. Their fuzz and distortion circuits are voiced for doom, stoner, sludge and riff-based rock – big low end, thick mids and enough gain to shake a room, but with the clarity to keep chords and complex riffs intact. If you’re chasing massive, amp-like saturation rather than polite overdrive, BAT is a great place to start.
Pharaoh & Pharaoh Supreme – The Modern Doom Fuzz Standard
The original Pharaoh became a modern classic for doom players. Pharaoh takes a Big Muff-style core and adds more range, clipping options and EQ control so it can run from gritty boost to punishing fuzz. Pharaoh Supreme pushes it further with a variable pre-gain control and extended diode options (germanium, silicon, MOSFET, LED and bypass) for huge flexibility on stage or in the studio.
LSTR & Crown of Horns – High-Gain Muff Variants
LSTR is BAT’s wild, aggressive Big Muff-type fuzz – loud, saturated and capable of both scooped and wide-open tones that cut through dense mixes. Crown of Horns takes an op-amp Muff heart and pairs it with a hybrid Pharaoh/LSTR tone stack, giving you a different flavour of Muff with a tight low end and plenty of bite.
Fnord, Skyboost & Tres Diablos – Fuzz, Boost and Beyond
Fnord v3 is a super high-gain fuzz with an octave twist – ripping, velcro-style fuzz that’s ideal for extreme textures and noise rock. Skyboost ranges from full-range boost and gritty treble boost into full-on fuzzy drive. Tres Diablos Ruidosos gives you three cascading gain stages (boost, overdrive and fuzz) that can be blended via three volume controls for a surprisingly simple but powerful multi-gain platform.
Raw Heart, Quantum Mystic & the heavier side
Raw Heart combines elements of the Witch Burner and Quantum Mystic circuits into a dual-channel distortion designed with Mike Scheidt of YOB. It excels at massive, mid-rich distortion tones that still let chords breathe. If you need a single pedal that covers rhythm grind and lead sustain at doom volumes, that’s where to look.
We’ve also interviewed Mark Wentz of Black Arts Toneworks in our People Behind The Pedals series, so if you want more background on the designs and philosophy behind these pedals, that’s a great read. If you’re unsure which BAT pedal fits your rig and style, drop us a line and we’ll happily talk you through the options.
