Why we like EarthQuaker Devices
EarthQuaker Devices pedals are built one at a time in Akron, Ohio. Since the first Hoof fuzz left Jamie Stillman’s basement, the focus has been on effects that are both inspiring and usable – fuzzes and amp-like drives, ambient delays and reverbs, modulation that feels alive, and a healthy dose of gloriously weird pitch and synth-style sounds. They’re tour-ready, studio-friendly and packed with character.
Afterneath & Dispatch Master – Ambient Essentials
Afterneath V3 is an “otherworldly reverberator” built from swarms of short digital delays that create cavernous ambience, blooming trails and pitch-warped textures. It features an all-analogue dry path, digital delay line, buffered bypass with Flexi-Switch technology and a Drag control with multiple modes for everything from big caverns to stuttering, clustered echoes.
Dispatch Master V3 combines a warm digital delay (up to around 2 seconds) with a lush, plate-like reverb, feeding both from an analogue dry path so your core tone stays intact. Delay and reverb can be used independently or together, and EQD’s Flexi-Switch footswitch lets you choose between latching and momentary operation on the fly.
Park Fuzz Sound & Acapulco Gold – Fuzz & Amp-Style Grind
Park Fuzz Sound is a collaboration with Park amplifiers, recreating their rare vintage fuzz circuit with matched NOS germanium transistors, extra output and a wider gain range for modern rigs. It delivers thick, harmonically rich fuzz that still cleans up well with your guitar’s volume knob.
Acapulco Gold is a one-knob power amp distortion based on the sound of a cranked Sunn Model T. Turn the single Level knob up for huge, saturated stoner-rock drive; roll your guitar volume back for gritty cleans and edge-of-breakup crunch. It’s simple, loud and very addictive.
Grand Orbiter, Sea Machine & Hummingbird – Characterful Modulation
Grand Orbiter is a four-stage OTA analogue phaser with three rate ranges, Sweep and Resonance controls, and a Phase/Vibrato switch that removes the dry signal for more warbly textures. It covers everything from gentle movement to deep, resonant sweeps and vibe-style wobble.
Sea Machine V3 is a highly tweakable chorus/modulation pedal with dedicated controls for Dimension, Animate and Shape, letting you dial in classic chorus, rotary-inspired swirl, detuned warble or almost delay-like modulation. It’s designed to sit well after drive and fuzz without turning to mush.
Hummingbird V4 is a repeat percussion tremolo inspired by vintage “stutter” circuits. With depth and rate controls, multiple speed ranges and expression input, it can move from subtle tremolo shimmer to ultra-fast, choppy, almost ring-mod style trem. Flexi-Switch bypass again gives you both latching and momentary options.
Data Corrupter & Rainbow Machine – Gloriously Weird
Data Corrupter is a monophonic, three-voice analogue PLL “synth” that transforms your guitar into a square-wave fuzz and then multiplies or divides it into harmonised intervals up to three octaves above and below. You can blend the Master Oscillator, Subharmonic and fuzz voices, and use the Glide and Vibrato controls for everything from synth bass to alien lead sounds.
Rainbow Machine V2 is a polyphonic pitch-shifting modulator that can do chorus, flanging, cascading pitch trails and complete chaos when you hit the Magic button. It’s designed for players who want harmonised, atonal and “broken tape” textures that standard pitch shifters just don’t do.
The Warden & Pyramids – Utility and Deep Modulation
The Warden V2 is an optical compressor with full control over Attack, Release, Ratio, Sustain, Level and Tone. It can run as a subtle always-on leveller or as a more obvious, squishy effect, adding a touch of studio polish to your signal.
Pyramids is a stereo flanging device built on the same DSP platform as Avalanche Run. It offers eight modes (Classic, Through-Zero, Barber Pole up/down, Step, Random and more), presets, tap tempo and extensive controls, covering everything from gentle movement to swirling jet-plane whooshes and endless barber-pole sweeps.
If you’re unsure whether to start with an ambient staple like Afterneath or Dispatch Master, a characterful dirt box like Park Fuzz Sound or Acapulco Gold, or something wild like Data Corrupter or Rainbow Machine, drop us a message and we’ll happily talk through the right EarthQuaker Devices pedal for your rig and style.
