Why we like Maxon

Maxon have a unique place in pedal history as the company behind many of the classic Tubescreamer circuits, and their own-branded range keeps that heritage alive with solid, gig-ready boxes. These are not hype-driven reissues but practical tools that still earn pedalboard space today, from low- to mid-gain overdrive through to thicker distortion and sustain. At Guitar FX Direct we like Maxon because they deliver proven tones with straightforward controls, making it easy to get great sounds with almost any guitar and amp.

OD808 – classic 808-style overdrive

The Maxon OD808 Overdrive Pedal recreates the late 1970s circuit that later became famous as the TS808 Tubescreamer. It serves up warm, creamy overdrive with a smooth mid push and singing sustain, ideal for pushing an amp into breakup or adding focused lead tones. Use it as an always-on tone shaper, a solo boost or a way to tighten up your low end for rock and blues.

OD9 – TS9-style overdrive with true bypass

The Maxon OD9 Overdrive is a true-to-spec reissue of the classic OD-9 / TS9 circuit with modern true bypass switching. It offers familiar mid-hump overdrive that cuts through a mix without sounding harsh, making it a great workhorse drive for gigs, rehearsals and sessions. If you want that recognisable Tubescreamer feel with updated switching and reliability, the OD9 is a strong option.

D&S Distortion and Sustainer – vintage transistor distortion

The Maxon D&S Distortion and Sustainer is a classic 70s-style transistor distortion that ranges from natural tube-like drive to more saturated rock tones. Unlike some muff-style circuits that can blanket your tone, the D&S is designed to retain more of your guitar and amp character while still delivering thick sustain and heft. It is a good choice if you want vintage-flavoured distortion that stays musical and responsive.

Overdrive Pro OD820 – overdrive and clean boost

The Maxon Overdrive Pro OD820 – Professional Overdrive & Clean Boost is designed as a touch-sensitive overdrive and boost for players who value dynamics. It delivers an expressive, open drive sound that responds to picking and guitar volume changes, and it can also function as a clean gain booster to push your amp or other pedals. If you are looking for a more expansive alternative to the standard Tubescreamer, the OD820 offers extra headroom and nuance.
