Delay is one of the most musical effects you can add to a guitar rig. Used subtly, it adds depth and space. Used boldly, it becomes part of the rhythm and arrangement.
But the way we got from “studio tape tricks” to toe-tap digital delays is a brilliant story of engineering, happy accidents, and musicians pushing whatever technology they could get their hands on.

Where delay really started: studio tape and “echo” as an effect
Long before pedals, delay lived in studios.
Early echo effects were created by re-recording sound and playing it back slightly later. With tape machines, engineers discovered you could create repeats by routing audio through a second playback head (or by physically re-feeding the signal). This produced the now-famous tape echo sound: warm repeats that darken and wobble slightly as the tape speed and mechanics introduce small imperfections.
That “imperfection” is the magic: tape repeats aren’t just copies — they bloom, smear, and soften, sitting behind your dry guitar tone like a halo.
The slapback era
One of the earliest “guitar delay sounds” people recognise is slapback: a single, short repeat that adds thickness and bounce without washing everything out. It became a signature feel in early rock and rockabilly. Have a listen to some of the early Johnny Cash recordings.
Echo units before pedals: tape, drum, and oil-can
As musicians wanted echo outside the studio, manufacturers built dedicated echo units. Three classic approaches shaped the sound we still chase today:
1) Tape echo
A very well known and popular at the tie example was the Watkins Copycat. It had many fans – especially the earlier ones which had valve circuitry – although few enjoyed the tape loop chewing up , just at a critical moment!
Another iconic portable echo unit was the Roland SpaceEcho – originally thought of as more of a PA echo – they round their way into many guitar rigs.
- warm repeats that get darker over time
- natural compression/saturation
- modulation (wow & flutter) that adds movement
2) Drum echo (magnetic drum)
Instead of tape, some units used a rotating magnetic drum. The sound can be clearer and more consistent than tape while still staying “analogue” in character — tight repeats with a vintage sheen.
3) Oil-can delay
Oil-can delay is one of the weirdest and coolest chapters.
These devices use an electrostatic method with a rotating disc (historically housed in an oil-filled canister in some designs).
The result is murky, vibey repeats — not hi-fi, but extremely characterful. If you love oddball textures, oil-can is a rabbit hole worth exploring.
How analogue delay made it onto pedalboards: the BBD revolution
The big step toward practical pedalboard delay came with bucket-brigade devices (BBD chips). Instead of tape or moving parts, BBD delay passes the signal through a chain of tiny storage stages.
- darker repeats (especially at longer times)
- a soft “bloom” that stays out of the way of the dry guitar
- musical self-oscillation when pushed
Analogue delays often feel “forgiving” because the repeats don’t fight your pick attack — they sit underneath it.
Digital delay: when clarity became a feature, not a compromise
Digital delay brought a different promise:
- longer delay times
- clearer repeats
- presets, tap tempo, MIDI, stereo, multi-algorithm designs
Early digital could be a bit clinical, but modern DSP delays can do both: pristine studio repeats and convincing tape/drum/oil-can emulations, often in the same pedal.
Granular delay and “modern weird”
Granular delay chops the signal into fragments (“grains”) and re-orders, stretches or pitch-shifts them. It can still behave like a delay — but it can also become shimmer, glitch, reverse ambience, and evolving soundscapes.
Delay vs reverb: what’s the difference?
A helpful rule:
- Delay = repeats you can often count (even when they blur)
- Reverb = reflections that merge into a space around the sound
Most rigs use both, but for many players the best starting point is delay — because it can be subtle and still feel dramatic.

Delay types you’ll actually choose between
Here’s the practical breakdown most buyers care about:
Tape-style delay
For: warmth, movement, “vintage record” feel
Look for: modulation, tape age/saturation controls, multi-head modes
Analogue (BBD) delay
For: dark repeats, thickening, self-oscillation fun
Look for: maximum delay time, filtering, modulation options
Digital delay
For: clarity, flexibility, long times, stereo rigs
Look for: tap tempo, presets, MIDI (if you run complex setups)
Multi-mode / experimental delay
For: ambient, glitch, granular, pitch and reverse effects
Look for: modes, pitch options, stereo, expression control
How to choose the right delay pedal for your rig
These are the decision points that actually matter:
1) What role do you want delay to play?
- Thickener / slapback (short time, low mix)
- Rhythmic echo (tap tempo, dotted-eighth options)
- Ambient wash (long repeats, modulation, stereo)
- Special effect (reverse, granular, pitch, glitch)
2) Do you need tap tempo?
If you play live to a drummer, click, or backing tracks, tap tempo becomes a quality-of-life upgrade.
3) Mono or stereo?
Stereo delay can be huge — especially if you use two amps or a stereo DI rig.
4) How much control do you want?
Some pedals are “set and forget”. Others are basically instruments (presets, MIDI, multiple algorithms). Neither is better — it depends on your workflow.

If you want the feel of analogue warmth with modern control, an analogue delay can be magic — repeats that melt into the mix rather than sitting on top of it.
If you want maximum versatility, modern digital/experimental designs can go from clean studio echo to complete signal-mangling (without losing usability).
