Noise Gates
Noise gates help eliminate unwanted noise or hum from your guitar signal when you’re not playing. It works by setting a threshold level for the volume of your guitar signal. Any sound that falls below this threshold is cut off or “gated.”
When playing, the signal is allowed to pass through the gate and into your amplifier as normal. But when you stop playing, the gate closes and cuts off any noise or hum that might be present in your signal.
This is particularly useful when using high gain pedals where an amount of noise is inherent in the design. There are some pedals with built in noise gatres, such as Guardian of the Wurm.

Can a noise gate affect my tone?

- A noise gate can eliminate most noise and hum from your guitar signal only when you’re not playing, but it won’t eliminate all noise.
- It just stops noise during quiet passages. It gates it does not reduce.
