Pedal Power Supplies – Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need a dedicated pedal power supply?
A dedicated pedal power supply gives you clean, stable power with enough current for modern digital pedals, and often multiple isolated outputs to reduce hum and ground-loop noise. Cheap daisy chain adapters can work for very small rigs, but as you add more pedals you will usually benefit from a proper unit like the CIOKS DC7 or SOL.
What is an isolated output and why does it matter?
Isolated outputs are electrically separated from each other, which helps prevent noise and ground loops between pedals. This is especially important when mixing analogue and digital pedals, or running stereo rigs. Power supplies such as the CIOKS 8 and DC10 provide multiple isolated outlets with different current ratings and voltages so you can match each pedal correctly.
How do I know how much current I need?
Each pedal has a current draw, usually listed in milliamps (mA). Add up the draw of the pedals you plan to power from each outlet and make sure it stays under that outlet’s rating. High current digital pedals like Strymon, Meris or big multi-effects usually need 250–400mA or more. Supplies like the CIOKS DC7 and CIOKS 4 are designed with these in mind.
What about different voltages – 9V, 12V, 18V and so on?
Many modern supplies offer switchable voltages per outlet. Always check what your pedal requires before changing anything. Some drives and preamps can benefit from 12V or 18V for extra headroom, while others must only ever see 9V. CIOKS units like the 8 Expander, SOL and DC5 Link make it easy to select the right voltage per outlet.
How do I choose the right power supply for my board?
Start by counting your pedals, checking each one’s voltage and current requirement, and noting whether you might expand the board in future. Compact rigs may only need a smaller unit like the SOL or CIOKS 4, while larger or more demanding setups are better served by a DC7 with an 8 Expander or a multi-outlet unit such as the DC10 or Big John Link.
If you would like help matching a CIOKS supply to your current or planned board, get in touch with the list of pedals you use and we can recommend a clean, quiet and expandable power solution.
