Sequencer Pedals

Sequencer Pedals – Frequently Asked Questions

What does a sequencer pedal do?

A sequencer pedal steps through a programmed pattern of changes – often pitch shifts, filter movements or volume pulses – in time with a tempo. Instead of you playing every note of an arpeggio or pattern, the pedal moves through a sequence automatically while you hold notes or chords, creating rhythmic and melodic motion.

How is a sequencer pedal different from an arpeggiator?

The two concepts overlap, but most sequencer pedals offer more control over the steps than a traditional arpeggiator. A pedal like the Hologram Dream Sequence lets you design patterns of octave shifts and rhythmic gates, while a pedal such as Alexander Colour Theory focuses on step-based modulation and pitch with a more compact interface.

Where should sequencer pedals go in my signal chain?

Sequencer pedals that focus on pitch and rhythmic gating usually work well after your drives and before delay and reverb. This gives the sequencer a harmonically rich signal to work with, while your ambience pedals smooth out the pattern and place it in a space. If you are using other pitch effects, try placing the sequencer before or after them to see which interaction you prefer.

Do I need MIDI to get the best from a sequencer pedal?

MIDI sync and preset control can make life easier on complex rigs, but it is not essential. Pedals like the Dream Sequence can be used with simple tap tempo and front-panel controls; MIDI is an optional extra if you want to integrate them with drum machines, DAWs or other tempo-synced devices.
