The Death By Audio Echo Dream 2 is a lo-fi modulating delay with a fuzz stage. Modulation and master volume controls have been added to the original Echo Dream.
It covers lo-fi delay from slapback through to longer ambient echoes, with the option to add fuzz to the delayed signal, apply modulation for chorus and vibrato-style effects, or push the delay into self-oscillation.
The bucket brigade circuit gives the repeats a warm, naturally degrading character. Push the delay time to a full second and the circuit introduces lo-fi chirps and noise — intentional and characteristic of BBD delays pushed past their limits.
Controls
- Master: Master output volume.
- Fuzz: Set the gain level and by implication the amount of fuzz
- Delay: Sets the level of the delayed signal compared with dry guitar sound
- D Time: Controls the delay time from approximately 20ms to 1 second. Push further for lo-fi noise.
- Feedback: Controls the number of repeats from single slapback to self-oscillation.
- Speed: Sets speed that the modulator oscillates
- Depth: Depth sets how far the modulator swings the delay time
- Left toggle: Keeps the dry signal with the repeats or removes it.
- Right toggle: Select sine or square wave modulation. Square gives choppy, stepped movement.

The Micro Dream is a compact version of the Echo Dream circuit with just three controls — Time, Feedback, and Delay level. The Echo Dream 2 adds a fuzz circuit, modulation, and a master volume control. The core BBD delay circuit is the same in both.
When the delay time is pushed past its normal range, the PT2399 delay chip runs out of headroom and introduces lo-fi artifacts. DBA intentionally push the delay chip outside its specifications to access these sounds. They’re a feature, not a fault.

I have tried a number of other delays including the Catalinbread Belle Epoch and the Echo Dream 2 remains my favourite.
The Echo Dream 2 will do standard slap back and subtle delays but if you choose it will all also do the weird and wonderful as well as the steps between the 2 extremes. This is a complicated looking pedal but in practice it is easy enough to use after a little experience whether you are looking for a very specific classic delay sound or experimenting and seeing where the Echo Dream 2 will let you go……which can be some pretty far out places if you are willing to explore what the pedal allows you to do.
This is my 2nd Echo Dream 2 , the 1st is now in a friend’s studio, and one thing I have noticed with both units is that they sound quite harsh straight out of the box but after a couple of hours use trying out different controls and settings the harshness diminishes and the pedal takes on a warm musical quality which is present at even the most extreme settings.
In conclusion this is a well built, durable pedal that offers pretty much any type of delay you could wish for, it is described as a lo-fi delay but sound quality is excellent with excess noise only appearing if the pedal is pushed to extremes.
