The Acapulco Gold strips distortion down to its simplest form: one knob, one footswitch, and the roar of a cranked vintage Sunn Model T power amp. There’s nothing to dial in beyond output level — everything else happens at your guitar.

Key Features

  • Power amp distortion modelled on a cranked vintage Sunn Model T
  • Deliberately minimal control set: one output volume knob, one footswitch
  • All-analogue circuit, true bypass via relay-based soft-touch switching
  • 9V DC centre-negative or 9V battery
  • Handmade one at a time in Akron, Ohio

One Knob, Your Guitar Does the Rest

EarthQuaker built the Acapulco Gold around a simple idea: tone lives in your hands, not in a wall of knobs. The single knob sets output volume — that’s it. Gain and character come entirely from how you play and how you set your guitar’s own volume and tone controls. With your guitar’s volume maxed, the Acapulco Gold roars like a wide-open Model T on the verge of explosion. Back the volume off slightly and it settles into a raunchy, classic overdrive. Roll it right down and you get a hazier, more spanked-out tone with a country or Nashville flavour. Guitars with independent volume and tone per pickup and a selector switch effectively turn this one-knob pedal into a three-channel amp.

Controls

  • Volume: sets the output level. This pedal gets extremely loud — be careful when first engaging it
  • Footswitch: true bypass on/off, via relay-based soft-touch switching

Power

Runs on a standard 9V DC centre-negative supply, or a 9V battery. Current draw isn’t published, but as a simple analogue circuit it’s low. A CIOKS SOL handles it comfortably.

Who Is This For

Worth a look if you want the sound of a cranked vintage power amp without a wall of knobs to fiddle through — particularly if you already shape your tone with your guitar’s own controls and want a pedal that gets out of the way rather than adding another decision to make.

Watch It In Action

What does the EarthQuaker Devices Acapulco Gold do?

It’s a power amp distortion pedal modelled on a cranked vintage Sunn Model T, giving you an open, crunchy amp-breakup tone rather than a typical stompbox distortion sound.

What power supply does the Acapulco Gold need?

A standard 9V DC centre-negative supply, or a 9V battery. Current draw isn’t published, but as a simple analogue circuit it’s low. A CIOKS SOL handles it comfortably.

Is the Acapulco Gold true bypass or buffered?

True bypass, using a relay-based soft-touch switching system. Note that audio will not pass through the pedal without power connected, even in bypass.

How do I control the gain on a one-knob pedal?

Through your guitar’s own volume and tone controls. With volume maxed, the Acapulco Gold roars; back it off slightly for a raunchy overdrive; roll it right down for a hazier, spankier tone.

Does the single knob do anything besides volume?

No, that’s deliberate. The one knob sets output level only. EarthQuaker built this pedal around the idea that your guitar’s own controls should shape the gain and tone, not the pedal.
