The Fairfield Circuitry Barbershop Millenium is a JFET overdrive built around matched transistors, a wide drive range, and the unique SAG voltage control.
The Barbershop is an original design, not a clone.
What is the Fairfield Circuitry Barbershop Millenium Like?
Raw, gritty, warm, smooth, open, and transparent are terms that describe this overdrive. It sounds great with any setup but truly shines when used to dirty up a tube amp.
The matched JFETs are a crucial component, working harmoniously with the rest of the circuitry. This alignment is crucial for providing a warm, dynamic response that faithfully respects the natural tone of your pickups.
Key Features
- Original JFET based design
- Matched semiconductors throughout

- Responsive to playing
- Works on guitar and bass too
- True Bypass
- 9V DC centre-negative, 5mA — battery operation also supported
- Designed for 9–9.6V only — do not run above 9V
- 2-year warranty
- Handmade in Hull, Québec, Canada
The Barbershop Sag Control
The SAG control is really the star of the show here. This is the thing that sets the Barbershop Millenium apart for the pack!
It mimics the behaviour of a power supply running out of headroom which is just what you get when a real valve amp is reaching its limits. Notoriously difficult to create in a pedal. At lower SAG settings the sound gets browner, thicker, and more compressed. Alternatively, your picking dynamics alone will take you from clean to saturated.
Controls
- Drive: Sets the interstage gain of the amplifiers. More gain means more distortion. The wide operating range allows you to go from an almost clean gain to a tasty rich overdrive.
- Sag: The Sag control reduces the voltage to the amplifiers as you turn it counterclockwise, giving additional control over the character and feel of the saturation. The lower the Sag, the browner the sound. Full voltage is applied when the control is set fully clockwise. It is at this setting that the pedal has the potential to be its cleanest and loudest.
- Tone: A 3-position switch allows you to select between different flavours of high cut. In the middle, there is no cut, like the classic Barbershop of days passed. To the right, a subtle high cut to tame ever so slightly the feeling of brightness accompanied with the Barbershop. To the left, is a more extreme cut for those times when you want to delve into your dark side.
- Volume: Controls the output volume of the pedal while keeping the effect unchanged. This is where you have plenty of room to boost.
Power
The Barbershop Overdrive can be powered by either a 9V battery or a typical 9V center negative supply.
Like most pedals, the input is switched in order to turn the pedal ON when a 1/4” jack is in place. If using a battery, to avoid draining it unnecessarily, always unplug the IN jack when not in use. Current draw is 5mA
