The JHS Pedals Unicorn is the world’s first bulb-driven photocell modulator vibrato with tap tempo. The Unicorn is now updated to version 2 .

The JHS Pedals Unicorn sounds as good as you remember

The Unicorn is bursting with all the lush and washy pulsations. This changed what the electric guitar could sound like in the 1960s. And this is no digital emulation. The Unicorn sports the real-deal, analog photocell topology of the original units.

  • Sounds like the original because it’s built like the original
  • All-analog signal path delivers a warm, touch-sensitive tone
  • Dry/Wet toggle selects between a Uni-Vibe* and vibrato effect

Controls

The Unicorn Uni-vibe* Photocell Modulator is easy to dial up the exact pulse of a mystical Unicorn!

Four knobs and a mini toggle are all you need for a world of syrupy, modulated tones

  • Volume: The Volume control allows you to adjust the amplitude of the effected signal from zero all to 9db boost. This allows you to perfectly place the Unicorn wherever you want in the mix.
  • Ratio: The Ratio control lets you choose 4 speed ratios that ultimately effect the tempo you tap in. You can choose between 1/4, 1/8, dotted 1/8 and Triplets.
  • Speed: The Speed control works in conjunction with the tap tempo. It lets you adjust the rate at which the effect moves.
  • Depth: The Depth control lets you adjust the wet/dry relationship between your clean signal and the effect. This gives you all the control you need to go from very subtle to hard effect.
  • Mini Toggle: The mini toggle is the wet/dry adjustment. When in the up position you get a preset amount of dry, known as the classic Univibe modulation effect. In the down position, you get an all wet vibrato setting. This can go from subtle warped record to extreme sea-sick tones.

Left two controls are your tone, right two controls are your speed, toggle is your effect. It’s that simple.

Tempo Control

There are other analogue vibe pedals and there are pedals with tap-tempo control. However, the JHS Unicorn is the first to put ‘em together.

Add optional external speed control and a ratio knob that determines the rhythmic subdivisions and you have one of the most versatile vibe pedals on the market.

External Tempo and Expression Control

But wait, there’s more! One of the things that makes the vintage Shin-ei* Uni-Vibes* so desirable is your ability to control the effect’s rate in real time with an external expression pedal. How could we not include that!? Also you can slave the pedal to other tap-controlled pedals for rhythmic consistency across all your effects.

– Internal Tap/Expression mini switch controls the side-mounted Tap/Exp TRS jack

– Expression pedal control of the Unicorn’s rate in the Exp setting

– Use an external source to control the rate in the Tap Out setting (which coincidentally works great with our Panther Cub Delay and Emperor Chorus pedals)

Some Uni-Vibe History from JHS

In the 1960’s a new guitar effect was introduced that would leave its mark on some of the most influential music ever made. Classic songs like Pink Floyd’s “Breathe”, Jimi Hendrix’s “Machine Gun” and “Star Spangled Banner live at Woodstock 1969″, Robin Trowers “Bridge of Sighs,” and even modern-day classics like Pearl Jam’s “Alive” all feature this unmistakable effect.

First introduced under the Shin-ei* and Univox* name brands, the Uni-Vibe* effect has shaped some of the most famous guitar tones ever and to this day still inspires modulation /phasing/rotary sounds that are lush, original, and far from the typical route of safe and standard guitar effects.

What sets the Unicorn apart from all other Uni-Vibe* circuits up till now is that we have for the first time ever added tap tempo control of the LFO rate as well as ratio, external tap control, and external expression of the speed.

We are super proud of bringing all the magic of this classic circuit into the modern age without compromising the integrity of the all analogue signal path, photocell topology, and true classic invention that the 1960s gave us.
