Here’s the thing about the Keeley Compressor Mini. Keeley make the compressors to beat — that’s not a controversial opinion, they are the benchmark against which others are measured.

The Compressor Plus has been on more professional pedalboards than most pedals ever get close to. The Mini is the entry point into that world — and it’s a more considered piece of engineering than its two-knob layout might suggest.

Unusually, this isn’t just a minimalist version of the Compressor Plus. It’s uses Manhattan-style compression. The automatic blend, tone recovery, and transient release time make intelligent decisions about how to treat your signal so you don’t have to. Two knobs cover everything you actually need. Everything else is handled internally.

The result won Premier Guitar’s Premier Gear Award — which, alongside the Nocturne’s award in the same programme, tells you all you need to know about Keeley.

What is Manhattan-Style Compression?

This is a studio compression technique. A proportion of the dry signal is feeds-back into the output — parallel compression. The result is that you get the sustain, evening-out, and punch of compression without losing your transients and dynamics. Notes don’t get squashed.

Most compressors require you to set a Blend knob to achieve this. The Compressor Mini does it automatically — the internal circuit calculates the appropriate blend based on the Comp setting.

What Does the Automatic Tone Recovery Do?

Heavily compressed guitar signals tend to dull high-frequency content — it’s a common issue. The Compressor Mini includes an automatic tone recovery circuit that compensates for this at high compression settings, maintaining crystal clear highs even when the compression is pushed hard. Get the sustain without the woolliness.

Keeley Compressor Mini Controls

  • Level: Sets the output level of the pedal. Set to unity and above to push your drive pedals or amplifier.
  • Comp: Sets the amount of compression and sustain applied to your signal.
  • Footswitch: Turns the effect on and off. True Bypass.

Three Starting Points

  • Valve-like compression: Level at unity, Comp at around 9 o’clock. Subtle, warm, and transparent — the setting most players leave on permanently.
  • Compressed boost: Level above unity, Comp moderate. Adds sustain and pushes the signal level for driving pedals or amplifiers harder.
  • Bloom effect: Level at unity or above, Comp high. Maximum sustain — notes swell and bloom naturally rather than attacking hard and fading fast.

Keeley Compressor Mini vs Keeley Compressor Plus

The Compressor Plus has four controls — Sustain, Tone, Blend, and Level — plus a switch that changes the attack and release specifically for single coils or humbuckers. It gives you manual control over the parallel compression blend, the tone recovery, and the release time, which means more flexibility and more scope for dialling in a specific compression character.

The Compressor Mini automates all of those things. It’s a set it and forget it pedal — and for many players, that’s exactly what a compressor should be.

FAQs

What does the Comp knob do?

It sets the amount of compression and sustain applied to your signal.

What is Manhattan-style compression?

What does the automatic tone recovery circuit do

It maintains sparkle and clarity when using heavy compression

How does it compare to the Keeley Compressor Plus

The Compressor Plus gives you manual control over Blend, Tone, Sustain, and Attack/Release for single coil or humbucker – whereas the Compressor Mini os ” set and forget”

Can I use it as a clean boost?
