The KMA Fuzzly Bear V2 has a story that goes back to the very beginning of KMA.
It was their first ever production pedal, released in 2013, inspired by one of the most overlooked fuzz circuits of the 1970s: the Jordan Bosstone.
The Bosstone wasn’t even a conventional pedal, it plugged directly to the guitar jack, which made it a bit limited and probably explains why it never caught on! But, the fuzz itseld was excellent!
What KMA heard in the Bosstone circuit was something worth rescuing.
Warm, smooth, fuzz tones with unique harmonic character that sits somewhere between overdrive and fuzz. However, the problem was the massive low end loss that the original circuit suffered from.
KMA rebuilt it with the low end fixed and added a Bias control to give access to a much wider range of sounds than the original.
The Skin/Meat control (KMA’s name for the Bias knob) is the key to everything. At low settings it gives a sharp, defined drive. Turn it up for a thick, heavy wall of fuzz. At maximum Gain, with high Skin/Meat settings,you get a starved, gated fuzz with a ghost octave quality.
It’s the kind of sound associated with dying batteries in vintage fuzz circuits, but here it’s available intentionally and repeatabley.
The Fuzzly Bear V2 takes that circuit and puts it into a pedalboard friendly enclosure with top-mounted jacks and relay-based silent switching.
Controls
- Gain: Controls the gain range from dirty overdrive through to full aggressive fuzz. At maximum Gain with high Skin/Meat, the circuit enters gated, starved fuzz territory with a ghost octave character.
- Skin/Meat (Bias): Adjusts the bias of the circuit. Low settings give a sharp, cutting drive tone. Higher settings give a thick, meaty wall of fuzz.
- Volume: Master output volume.
