What is the OBNE Parting?

Parting is a collaboration between Old Blood Noise Endeavors and Emily Hopkins. Emily is an “electric harpist”, known for scoring animation, video games, and theatre. She also has a YouTube channel covering effects pedals.

This is a brand new design, made specifically for Emily and what she needed for her sound.

Parting has two parallel effect paths. One is tremolo or vibrato, modulated by seven LFO waveforms. The other is a glitch delay and reverb, where a snippet of signal is randomly selected for the delay and reverb effects. It also creates clock subdivisions causing octave glitching. These glitches can be locked or randomised.

Controls

• Dissolve: Affects both channels. One way it reduces the sample rate, giving a lo-fi, crushed sound. Turn it the other way and it reverses the signal and reduces the clock rate the further the control is turned, making the decaying tail increasingly lo-fi. This is not just a “channel mix” function.
• Rate: Sets the modulation rate of the LFO.
• Depth: Sets the depth of the LFO.
• Shape: Defines the LFO shape — Sine, Square, Reverse Saw, Saw, Random Sine, Random Square, Envelope.
• Chance: Allows random bits of signal to enter the delay/reverb buffer during an LFO cycle.
• Smear: Diffuses and feeds back to the delay lines. Get a lush reverb when this knob is turned up.
• Glitch: Creates various clock subdivisions.
• Time: Sets the timing of the delay/reverb, as well as the reverse.
• Filter: Sets the cutoff frequency of the post-Dissolve filter.
• Mix: As you would expect, sets the blend of dry and wet signal.

An Aux switch engages external tap tempo through the Expression jack. This is turned off and on by pressing Aux while holding On/Off.

There is a low noise soft touch footswitch that latches the effect on or off, or holds for momentary action.

Setup, Presets, and Routing

Parting has three presets. All you do is hold the Preset switch for five seconds until the LED starts blinking, cycle to the slot you want, then hold again for five seconds to confirm.

Routing is equally straightforward.

Hold On/Off and press Preset to cycle through Mono, Mono-In-Stereo-Out, and Stereo, shown by which preset LED blinks.

While you’re in that menu, holding the Preset switch for five seconds toggles bypass mode between true bypass and trails — a faster blink means trails are on, a slower blink means they’re off. Both routing and bypass settings save globally rather than per-preset.

Expression control is assigned by turning any knob while holding the On/Off footswitch. Wherever the knob sits when you press the switch becomes your heel position, and wherever it sits when you release becomes your toe position. Any knob you don’t touch stays unaffected by the expression pedal.

If you get lost or need to start again, full factory reset is easy by holding On/Off and Aux for ten seconds.

Parting runs in true stereo, with an analogue dry signal path. Each parameter is MIDI controllable and can sync its delay timing to external gear.

Power and Connections

Parting requires a 9V DC centre-negative power supply capable of at least 350mA — not included in the box, so make sure your power supply has the headroom for it. All the CIOKS range are ideal for this.
